Bodegas Muga has presented a cheque for 75,000 euros as a donation from the “Wine for Research” project, through the initiative of the ‘300 Club’ and all the members of which it is made up and who have made it possible, in order to carry out a project to combat cerebral cancer in -Medulloblastoma-, the most common malignant brain tumour among children.

The CRIS Advanced Therapies Research Unit, led by Dr. Antonio Pérez, paediatrician, researcher and head of the paediatric oncology department of the hospital, will be responsible for spearheading such an important challenge.

The medulloblastoma is the most common malign brain tumour among children. Despite modern treatment methods, 30-40% of them can suffer relapses or metastasis, for which there are very few effective treatments. The most promising treatments for this type of tumour can be found among cellular therapies based on cells from the immune system.

This project is split into 2 parts: one clinical and the other research.
On the one hand, thanks to the excellent results obtained in the laboratory in medulloblastoma models using GABI cells, a phase 1 clinical trial will be conducted in which these cells will be used to treat childhood medulloblastoma patients in relapse. These cells have already shown a high degree of effectiveness in the laboratory in the identification and destruction of brain cell tumours, so positive results are expected.

Moreover, in this project work continues to improve Natural Killer cells to combat medulloblastomas. To do this, the safety and effectiveness of an innovative therapy is being laboratory tested based on CAR cellular technology, with the aim of setting the basis for a future clinical trial in patients with medulloblastoma.

The president of the CRIS Cancer Foundation, Lola Manterola, explains that this body “has been working for 12 years and with a commitment built up over the long term, thanks to the contribution of society, in order to reach the zero cancer goal of CRIS Cancer, promoting transnational research projects which are at the forefront of knowledge, providing resources to the best researchers in search of treatments which manage to cure cancer.
We insist that cancer affects everybody, it enters all our homes, and from CRIS Cancer we urge everyone, whether individually or through companies, the media or institutions, to unite behind research as the only solution for beating this difficult disease”.

For his part, Isaac Muga, winemaker at Bodegas Muga and one of the main promotors of the project, said he felt “very proud to be able to take part and make a contribution in an area of such vital importance as research into childhood cancer, And both the Muga family and the members of the 300 Club are aware that the only solution for controlling this disease is to give researchers resources and bring together the best specialists in the field so as to reduce infant mortality due to this disease”. Finally, he expressed his thanks to “all the collaborators who have contributed to this sixth project, including Estuchería Vargas, Labelgrafic, Cr3a diseño y publicidad and MRW”.

A charity wine for cancer research for this sixth project

For this sixth charity project, Bodegas Muga have chosen an exclusive, limited edition wine whose label and case bear a design which pays homage to all those brave little souls who fight this disease every day.

All the members of the 300 Club which has made this project possible have received in their homes 6 bottles of this unprecedented wine. Moreover, all the profits these have generated will be destined to achieve the goal that was set: to research to fight against child brain cancer. This project enjoyed the collaboration of Estuchería Vargas, Labelgrafic, Cr3a diseño y publicidad and MRW.
