The most influential wine critic in the world, the American Robert Parker, has given the highest score to Muga Rosado 2006 in the rosé wines category. The prestigious wine critic gave 90 points to this wine, thus placing it as the best rosé in Spain and within the three best rosé wines in the world. According to Parker’s scoring system, wines that achieve 90 – 95 points can be considered “excellent”.

Muga Rosado is a unique wine, made out of 60% Garnacha (Grenache), 30% Viura (Macabeo) and 10% Tempranillo. The making of this wine entails, firstly, a twelve-hour maceration where juice is in contact with skins. Then, the wine ferments in small oak containers (1,000 l. capacity each) at 18ºC. After two months sitting in some other bigger deposits, comes cold stabilization, filtration and bottling. The peculiar salmon coloured pink makes it enormously attractive to the eye. It has an enveloping and intense aroma, and shows excellent fruit notes of ripe red apples and quince, tropical fruits (kiwi and pineapple). The retronasal passage favours the ripe fruits and leaves the fresh fruits in the background. In the mouth is evocative, with lively acidity making it fresh and crisp, yet it has a good deal of body making it a mouth-filling wine. The carbonic adds the typical freshness of these wines.

The production of the 2006 vintage was 120,000 bottles of which 71% was steered towards exports and a 29% for national distribution. The excellent quality of this wine –and likewise of all the wines made at Bodegas Muga— resulted in a great sales success, and left the winery out of stock. The next vintage (2007) is expected to be available by the beginning of 2008.

Rosé wine consumption has grown enormously in these last years worldwide. This is due to the improvement in the product quality but also to the search of new products by the consumers. We can say rosé wine is “in” right now. It is a perfect wine to accompany any dish because of its potential good match with different foods. It is no longer considered a drink suitable only for appetizers but, on the contrary, it is now highly valued by the experts. Bodegas Muga, loyal to its policy of giving priority to quality over quantity, makes the best rosé using only vineyards that are specially cultivated for this end and choosing the best grapes of each of the varieties that are combined to make this wine.
